In Week 2 of The Fear of God sermon series, Pastor Taylor teaches “The Journey to Fearing God: ‘Both Sides of the Knife.’” Through Genesis 22:9–12, we revisit Abraham and Isaac on Mount Moriah and discover how one act of obedience reshaped what they believed about God, how they experienced Him, and how they taught future generations to know Him.
Abraham’s obedience was not rooted in love alone. It came from a deep reverence for God’s power, presence, faithfulness, justice, and authority. To fear God, we must experience Him and trust that He is everything Scripture declares Him to be.
This message examines the lessons found on both sides of the knife.
From Abraham’s perspective, we learn:
• God is powerful enough to provide what we need • God will confront anything that competes with His glory
• God’s love provides a sacrifice so that we do not suffer ultimate loss
• Abraham came to know God personally as Jehovah-Jireh, the Lord who provides
From Isaac’s perspective, we learn:
• Worship is more than a song; worship requires sacrifice
• Surrendering to God may require submitting to others
• When heaven speaks, revelation and a solution follow
• Isaac came to know God as the God who is to be feared
Isaac’s experience on Mount Moriah did not only change his understanding of God. It reshaped how he lived, how he raised his family, and how future generations spoke about the Lord. His encounter became a spiritual inheritance.
